Bathroom upgrades and renovations can send your head reeling. They can be an extravagant affair or just a simple update – it’s your choice!

At Upkeep Plumbing we can assist with full bathroom renovations where fittings and fixtures need moving to improve the layout of the room, or simple updates that can add a whole new feel, such as replacing taps, shower heads and the toilet.

We also have access to an extensive network of qualified tradies that we can recommend to help you finish the job.

How a bathroom renovation usually runs

Every job is different, but the plumbing tends to bookend the project:

  1. Plan and choose. Glenn is happy to price up toilet suites and fittings and send photos of taps back and forth, so you can choose your fixtures before work starts.
  2. Disconnect. We disconnect the water and waste ready for demolition.
  3. Re-direct. If the layout is changing, we re-direct the water and waste to suit the new fit-out.
  4. Other trades. Builders, electricians, brickies and tilers do their part.
  5. Fit-out. Your new fixtures go in.

Tips from a plumber who’s done hundreds

Glenn has renovated bathrooms for other people for years, and recently did his own. His advice:

  • Expect it to be loud, dirty and disruptive. Cover furniture, move items out of nearby rooms and lay towels over your flooring.
  • You can’t plan for everything. Things pop up that nobody can foresee, so be flexible.
  • Go for quality. Better fittings and tiles last longer and are easier to work with.
  • Hire quality help. Know your limits and call in an expert.

Design ideas

In his 2018 trends post, Glenn noted a few ideas that were popular at the time: freestanding baths, polished brass and chrome tapware, natural tones such as stone and wood, split handheld and fixed shower roses, and frameless shower screens.
