The kitchen is considered the hub of the modern Australian home. Unfortunately, when many of the houses in Melbourne were built this was not the case, and the kitchen was often tucked away. Transforming a kitchen from a dark, dated work area into a light, modern space can be a great joy for home owners.

At Upkeep Plumbing, we get particular pleasure from seeing and being part of a kitchen transformation – replacing old spindle taps with a lovely new mixer tap or fitting a new gas cooktop. The transformation can be amazing!

In Glenn’s 2018 trends post he looked at what was popular at the time: two-tone cabinetry, minimal upper cabinets, appliances concealed behind cabinetry, and polished brass and chrome making a comeback while matt black faded.

His advice hasn’t dated. Choose big-ticket items you believe will last through changing trends, then update with cheaper touches such as pictures on the wall, tea towels and coloured utensils.

Tips from a plumber who’s renovated his own home

• Expect it to be loud, dirty and disruptive. Cover furniture, move items out of the affected and surrounding rooms, and lay towels over your flooring.
• Go for quality. Glenn buys fittings from a dedicated plumbing supplier. They cost a bit more, but the quality is so much better.

Gas cooktops and clearances

Gas cookers and hotplates need adequate clearance from combustible surfaces, and the work must be done by a licensed gas fitter. See our gas appliances page for the details.
