Many houses built in Melbourne in the late 60s and early 70s have galvanised water pipes. Unfortunately, galvanised pipes do experience a build-up of debris and deposits that can result in complete blockages within the waterline. Some signs to look for that may indicate your waterline needs renewing include a brownish tinge to the water colour, poor pressure, or water not flowing freely from all the taps within your home.
Nowadays, there is a variety of piping that is used in place of galvanised pipe, which has the added advantage of being easy to repair and less likely to decay over time.

Why galvanised pipes cause trouble
Over time, galvanised pipes build up debris and deposits on the inside. Eventually that can result in a complete blockage in the waterline. Many Melbourne homes built in the late 1960s and early 1970s were plumbed this way.
What we replace them with
Modern piping is easy to repair and less likely to decay over time. In a week in the life of a maintenance plumber, Glenn repairs a leak under a house and notes that the pipe not being galvanised made it a relatively easy fix.
