Similar to water lines, gas lines can corrode and leak – particularly if it is an old galvanised gas line that is sitting in the dirt under your home.

You can normally smell a gas leak, and it is imperative that you do not ignore this warning sign – please seek assistance as soon as possible. Gas is a highly flammable substance and care needs to be taken around the home where gas is concerned.

If you can smell gas

If you can smell gas, stop. Don’t relight anything and don’t use light switches. Turn the gas off at the meter if it’s safe to do so, open the windows and get everyone outside. If you think there is immediate danger, call 000. Once it’s safe, ring us on 0401 956 095 to get it repaired.

Glenn’s advice from Plumbing damage and vandalism: if you have no hot water, check that your gas meter hasn’t been turned off before you call a plumber. It happens more often than you’d think.
